Your Grand Kids
You want to spend time with your grandchildren but what things can you do with them that will be fun for both you and for them? Your grandchildren have gone through different stages in their lives and their interests have continually changed. If you had been with them all the time, you would probably know their interests. However, like most grandparents you aren’t able to see your grandchildren often enough. So what can you do? Here are some suggestions:
For children who like to draw, you may ask them to draw or paint a picture of you. This would also give you an idea of how your grandkids see you. To start out, you may give them art materials as a gift. There is probably no kid who would not appreciate a new set of crayons and some paper. Of course their drawing skills are not perfect so don’t be surprised if your portrait does not seem to look quite like you. As their motor skills develop, their drawing skills will develop too. Don’t expect too much though, not everyone grows up to be an artist.
Cooking and baking would also be a nice choice. This is something that even the little boys would enjoy doing. Below is an easy recipe of chocolate chip cookies from popularcookierecipes.com that you may try with your grandkids. This is a treat to be enjoyed by all members of the family and a masterpiece that your grandkids would be proud to have baked with grandpa or grandma.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
Ingredients:
- ¾ cup sugar
- ¾ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 1 large egg
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- if desired, 1 cup chopped pecans
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix sugar, brown sugar, butter and egg in a large bowl by hand. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt. The dough will be very stiff. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes or until light brown. The centers will be soft. Let cool for one minute then remove from cookie sheet and place on wire rack to finish cooling.
If you feel that you are not confident enough yet to teach your grandchildren a skill or craft, probably one of the easy choices on fun things to do with your grandkids is to go to fun places. For the little ones, they would most likely enjoy going to the zoo and be amazed by the different animals. At the zoo, grandpa or grandma will be able to share things that he or she knows about animals and be able to teach their grandkids a thing or two.
Lastly, the best part and probably the easiest choice is to share yourself with your grandchildren. There is no need to be Super Grandpa or Super Grandma and be the best at everything. All you need is to just be yourself. Most people have a treasured memory of their grandparents, one that they bring through adulthood and relive with their own children and grandchildren. By sharing yourselves to your grandchildren, you become a part of them by building their character through the lessons you have learned in life. In all the activities that you may choose to do, what is most important is the nurturing relationship and the bond that you build with them that will last forever.
